Taking the third victory of his career in a chaotic and incident packed race, Perez surpassed compatriot Pedro Rodriguez for career wins and also became the first Mexican to win the iconic Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. His first win of the season was nail-biting to the end, with the race clock ticking down he had to fend off the onrushing Sainz, who closed the gap to just 1.15 seconds before being confirmed as the winner.
